{"abstract":"This action announces the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) approval of alternative testing methods for use in measuring the levels of contaminants in drinking water and determining compliance with national primary drinking water regulations. The Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) authorizes EPA to approve the use of alternative testing methods through publication in the Federal Register. EPA is using this streamlined authority to make 10 additional methods available for analyzing drinking water samples required by regulation. This expedited approach provides public water systems, laboratories, and primacy agencies with more timely access to new measurement techniques and greater flexibility in the selection of analytical methods, thereby reducing monitoring costs while maintaining public health protection.","action":"Final rule.","agencies":[{"raw_name":"ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY","name":"Environmental Protection Agency","id":145,"url":"https://www.federalregister.gov/agencies/environmental-protection-agency","json_url":"https://www.federalregister.gov/api/v1/agencies/145","parent_id":null,"slug":"environmental-protection-agency"}],"body_html_url":"https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/full_text/html/2012/06/28/2012-15727.html","cfr_references":[{"chapter":null,"citation_url":null,"part":141,"title":40}],"citation":"77 FR 38523","comment_url":null,"comments_close_on":null,"correction_of":null,"corrections":[],"dates":"This action is effective June 28, 2012.","disposition_notes":null,"docket_ids":["EPA-HQ-OW-2012-0288","FRL-9693-4"],"dockets":[],"document_number":"2012-15727","effective_on":"2012-06-28","end_page":38530,"executive_order_notes":null,"executive_order_number":null,"explanation":null,"full_text_xml_url":"https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/full_text/xml/2012/06/28/2012-15727.xml","html_url":"https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2012/06/28/2012-15727/expedited-approval-of-alternative-test-procedures-for-the-analysis-of-contaminants-under-the-safe","images":{},"images_metadata":{},"json_url":"https://www.federalregister.gov/api/v1/documents/2012-15727?publication_date=2012-06-28","mods_url":"https://www.govinfo.gov/metadata/granule/FR-2012-06-28/2012-15727/mods.xml","not_received_for_publication":null,"page_length":8,"page_views":{"count":1549,"last_updated":"2026-04-04 14:15:05 -0400"},"pdf_url":"https://www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/FR-2012-06-28/pdf/2012-15727.pdf","presidential_document_number":null,"proclamation_number":null,"public_inspection_pdf_url":"https://public-inspection.federalregister.gov/2012-15727.pdf?1340801354","publication_date":"2012-06-28","raw_text_url":"https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/full_text/text/2012/06/28/2012-15727.txt","regulation_id_number_info":{},"regulation_id_numbers":[],"regulations_dot_gov_info":{"supporting_documents":[{"title":"Results of the Inter-laboratory Method Validation Study using U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Method 1623.1: Cryptosporidium and Giardia in Water by Filtration/IMS/FA [EPA 816-R-12-002]","document_id":"EPA-HQ-OW-2012-0288-0029"},{"title":"Memo to Record from Carrie Miller, USEPA/Standards and Risk Management Division/Technical Support Center regarding basis for expedited approval of EPA Method 1623.1","document_id":"EPA-HQ-OW-2012-0288-0028"},{"title":"Memorandum from Jean Munch, Paul Grimmett and  Glynda Smith, Standards and Risk Management Division, Technical Support Center","document_id":"EPA-HQ-OW-2012-0288-0027"},{"title":"Memorandum from Glynda Smith and, Standards and Risk Management Division, Technical Support Center","document_id":"EPA-HQ-OW-2012-0288-0026"},{"title":"Memorandum from Glynda Smith and Steve Wendelken, Standards and Risk Management Division, Technical Support Center","document_id":"EPA-HQ-OW-2012-0288-0025"},{"title":"Smith and Wendelken 2012a: Memorandum to Record describing basis for expedited approval of USEPA Methods 523 and 536","document_id":"EPA-HQ-OW-2012-0288-0024"},{"title":"73 FR 31616 (June 3, 2008): Expedited Approval of Test Procedures for the Analysis of Contaminants Under the Safe Drinking Water Act;
