{"abstract":"NHTSA is proposing to amend Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 102, \"Transmission shift position sequence, starter interlock, and transmission braking effect.\" The proposed modification would except vehicles equipped with Automated Driving Systems (ADS) that do not have manually operated driving controls from the requirement for a transmission shift position display. This rulemaking would remove unnecessary regulatory burdens and costs associated with a display designed to aid a person driving the vehicle. As the transmission shift position display does not fulfill the same safety need in an ADS-equipped vehicle without manually operated driving controls, the amendment will not impact vehicle safety.
