Reader Aids

Reader Aids help people use FederalRegister.gov and understand the federal rulemaking process. Reader Aids information is not published in the Federal Register.

Linking to Corrections and Republications

We are now making it easier to find corrections and complete republications of Federal Register articles through “View Correction” and “View Republication” links from the originally published item. In the past, users could have difficulty finding correcting documents without browsing or searching on a regular basis.

When the OFR or GPO makes an error in publishing an item in the Federal Register, we correct the record by issuing a correction document, or in rare cases, by completely republishing the item. For example, this USDA document on wheat standards was corrected by a subsequent Federal Register document. A prominent button in the upper right part of the page alerts readers to the correction, and lets them toggle forward to the correction and back to the initially published item. This is accomplished through an automated linking process developed for FederalRegister.gov.

Note that if an agency makes an error and publishes its own correction or technical amendment, it would reference the originally published item in the preamble, and we would link up that citation. But there are no prominent “View Correction” or “View Uncorrected Article” buttons in that case. Users can browse, search, or set notifications to more easily find those types of follow-up documents.
