Enhanced Notice Sub-type Search Now Available

Background

We are excited to announce a new feature that will make it easier for you to search and find specific Notice type documents within the Federal Register. As you may know, the Federal Register includes various document types, including Proposed Rules, Rules, Notices, and Presidential Documents. Notices, in particular, cover a wide range of topics such as meetings, application availability, and deadlines for grant submissions. Although these documents are typically shorter in length, they represent the largest category in the Federal Register, accounting for approximately 81% of documents and 37% of pages published in 2023.

In addition to general Notices, there are two legally mandated sub-types: Sunshine Act Meeting Notices and System of Records Notices (SORN). The Sunshine Act requires certain agencies to publish notices of public meetings one week in advance, while the Privacy Act requires each agency to publish its systems of records in the Federal Register in individual system of records notices (SORN).

What’s New

With our latest update, we’ve made it even easier to navigate these documents. We’ve introduced a Notice Sub-type Search that enhances the existing document type filter, enabling you to search specifically for Sunshine Act Meeting Notices and SORNs.

Key Features

Advanced Document Filtering: When filtering by document type, you can now refine your search specifically to SORNs or Sunshine Act Meeting Notices, making it easier to find exactly what you need.

Comprehensive Data Coverage: We’ve reprocessed all Notices published since 2000, identifying those that fall under these sub-types, ensuring that your searches are as accurate and comprehensive as possible.

Integrated Search Functionality: These new sub-types are fully integrated with our existing search features. For example, you can filter SORNs published in a specific year or Sunshine Act Meeting Notices from a particular agency with ease.

Privacy Act Compilation Links

As part of this update, we’ve also enhanced suggestions for SORN-related searches. The Privacy Act of 1974 requires the Office of the Federal Register (OFR) to compile and publish a biennial Privacy Act Compilation. Starting in 2024, OFR is making available an interim compilation monthly, capturing any changes since the last biennial release.

When conducting SORN searches, you will now receive search suggestions linking you directly to the most recent Privacy Act Compilation, whether biennial or interim. Additionally, if your search is agency-specific, we’ll guide you to the most relevant compilation.
